News from the South Pacific: Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa—situated on the private Yanuca Island, connected by a causeway to the mainland—has unveiled a dramatic $50 million renovation. The makeover was extensive, touching all guest rooms and suites, recreational facilities, restaurants and CHI, The Spa. Dreaming of a tropical sojourn? Here are some of the highlights.
A new adults-only Reef Wing takes up more than a quarter of the island. Inspired by traditional Fijian bungalows, the new one-bedroom Reef Bures were designed as romantic beachfront retreats with outdoor rain showers, ocean views and separate living/dining areas. Guests in the Reef Wing get their very own golf buggy to spin around the resort. There’s an exclusive Reef Café & Dining restaurant, plus an exclusive infinity pool where complimentary cocktails and canapés are served every evening.
For families on vacation, there are new two-bedroom Lagoon Bures, measuring 1,410 square feet, with separate living and dining areas. There are a wealth of family activities at the resort, not to mention the kids’ club and dedicated teens entertainment zone.
Recreational activities run the gamut from water sports to golf at the nine-hole course designed by five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson. Fun fact: Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort is home to the largest inflatable water park in the South Pacific. There’s also the Shangri-La Marine Education Center where guests can learn about marine life and biodiversity.
A major goal of the renovation project was to position Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort as one of the best places to eat and drink in Fiji. When it comes to dining, guests have their pick between six new restaurants, serving a variety of cuisines including Italian and Asian-fusion. Note that 75 percent of the kitchen products are sourced locally. Last but not least: the famous Black Marlin Tropical Bar has been redesigned as a stylish tiki bar stocked with 100 rums from around the world, including the resort’s very own label.
