A Makeover for Memmo Baleeira in Portugal

The sun-drenched Algarve region of Portugal is a stunning stretch of coastline, home to sandy beaches and dramatic scenery. Close to the southwestern tip of Europe, the laid-back village of Sagres has a rich nautical history. It’s wild and empty out here—a true, untrammeled paradise. Gorgeous rock cliffs tower over the ocean, where surfers flock from all the world. In fact, there are a number of surfing schools to assist newbies ride the waves. One of these surf establishments is found at the design-driven hotel, a popular modernist haunt, called Memmo Baleeira.

And just in time for the spring season, the hotel has unveiled a makeover of its 144 guestrooms and public areas. The extensive renovation changed up the color palette, and completely remodeled the outdoor pool area. The wellness space was also refurbished, and the two children’s play area come complete with a climbing wall and trampolines.

But perhaps the biggest news of all is the debut of the Fornaria Memmo restaurant, which looks to celebrate the Algarve’s rich culinary traditions. An open wood-fired oven plays a central role in a 60s style space decorated with Scandinavian chairs, rattan sofas, and modern pieces by Philippe Starck and Tom Vrac. The menu is all about stellar local ingredients (like locally caught fish) prepared in a simple way; dishes include roasted octopus in rosemary olive oil and black linguini with shrimp and cuttlefish.
